Recording TV to a non-fixed drive in WMC

4 Jan

A few people out there still use Window Media Centre although since M$ dropped it from W10 it’s days are numbered. Since I replaced my Media Centre Extenders with Roku boxes, my only use for it now is to record OTA TV shows that I have on series record which I then play back via Plex.

For a few reasons, I though I would move my recorded TV to a high capacity USB 3.0 thumb drive that I had spare, but if you try to select this from the WMC GUI you will notice that it only allows you to choose from any fixed drives that you have.

To circumvent this, I changed the registry and that seems to have worked just fine:

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording

And change these 2 entries:

  • RecordPath
  • LastRecordPathSet

To the removable drive. (You will need to create the folder “Recorded TV” on the root of that drive).
