SQL 2012 Reporting Services, Maximum request length exceeded

17 Sep

This error popped up the other day whilst a user was working with reporting services on SQL 2012:

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: There was an exception running the extensions specified in the config file. —> System.Web.HttpException: Maximum request length exceeded.
at System.Web.HttpRequest.GetEntireRawContent()
at System.Web.HttpRequest.get_InputStream()
at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapServerProtocol.Initialize()
— End of inner exception stack trace —
at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapServerProtocol.Initialize()
at System.Web.Services.Protocols.ServerProtocol.SetContext(Type type, HttpContext context, HttpRequest request, HttpResponse response)
at System.Web.Services.Protocols.ServerProtocolFactory.Create(Type type, HttpContext context, HttpRequest request, HttpResponse response, Boolean& abortProcessing)

The fix was pretty simple (found here) and just required changing the web.config in the reporting services directory. Search for this key:

And modify it so that it now reads

If you are getting errors, check or lower the value you have entered for maxRequestLength.
Take a backup of your web.config before making any changes, it goes without saying really.
